Dungeons and Dragons Overview
Perhaps the oldest and most popular TTRPG of all time, Dungeons and Dragons is the starting point for many TTRPG players. D&D is a high fantasy game focused on combat and exploration, with much of the roleplaying coming from the Dungeon Master and players. Dungeons and Dragons has a vast ruleset, with rules dictating combat, spellcasting, social encounters, and even dungeon crawling. As such, there isn’t really space to explain all of it here, so we’ll just explain how dice are used.
Dice in Dungeons and Dragons
Dungeons and Dragons is responsible for the traditional 7 dice shapes used in the vast majority of TTRPGs. D&D is a d20 system, so you’ll use a d20 for the majority of rolls, like saves, ability checks, and attack roles. The other dice are used for other purposes, mainly damage and ability rolls, which are dictated by the weapons and abilities used. For example, a greataxe might deal 1d12 damage, or a powerful spell could deal 8d6 damage.
What We Love
Being an immensely popular system, one of the things we love about Dungeons and Dragons is the amazing amount of third-party material available. Whether you’re looking for more monsters, magic items, class, subclasses, or even additional rules to flesh out other playstyles, someone’s probably written something to help you out.
